Suspension

What happens to a domain no service plan covers

A domain that isn’t covered by a service plan isn’t cut off at once. It gets a grace period of one week, during which it goes on serving comments, and is suspended after that.

Domain states

A domain is always in one of three states, shown by its badge in the domain list and on its page:

  • Active — the domain is covered, and Comentario serves its comments as usual.
  • In the grace period — the domain isn’t covered. Its comments are still served, with a notice above them telling visitors the site will stop serving comments soon. The domain’s page tells its owners the date it’s suspended on.
  • Suspended — the grace period is over. Comentario no longer serves the domain’s comments, and shows an error message in their place.

The grace period is the same week for every plan.

Why a domain isn’t covered

Any of these:

  • nobody pays for it — the subscriber gave it up, stopped owning it, or deleted their account;
  • the subscriber has no plan in force — the trial ended, a paid plan lapsed or was cancelled, a complimentary plan ran out;
  • the subscriber’s plan has no room for it — they pay for more domains than the plan allows, and this is one of the last they took on;
  • the domain has had more page views this month than the subscriber’s plan allows.

The domain’s page tells which it is. Owners are emailed when a domain enters its grace period and when it’s suspended: the subscriber, or, when nobody pays for it, every owner.

A failed payment doesn’t count: your plan runs to the end of the period you’ve paid for while the payment is retried. See Payments.

Ending a suspension

The grace period and the suspension both end the moment a plan covers the domain again, for instance when:

  • the subscriber buys a plan, or upgrades to one that covers the domain;
  • another owner takes the domain’s subscription over, and their plan covers it;
  • the subscriber gives up the subscriptions of other domains, making room for this one.

The domain is then served as usual at once. Going over the limits again during a grace period doesn’t restart it: the week runs from when the domain first went over.

Page views and the 1st of the month

The page view counter starts again on the 1st of each month, but that doesn’t lift a suspension over page views by itself: the number of views the domain had when it went over is recorded, and the plan has to cover that. Otherwise a domain somewhat over its allowance would sit out a grace week every month and never be suspended.

Suspension by the operator

The operators of Comentario Cloud may also suspend a domain, at once or after the grace week, with a note to its owners, which is what the domain’s page shows as the reason. Such a suspension is lifted by an operator only: no payment, plan change or takeover lifts it, and nobody is emailed about it.
