Using Comentario cloud-hosted version

Rather not wrangle servers? Totally fair. If self-hosting Comentario isn’t your idea of a fun weekend, let someone else do the heavy lifting in the cloud.

Comentario Cloud

Comentario Cloud is Comentario with the chores done for you: no server to install, no updates to babysit, no backups to worry about, and no database to tuck in at night. It’s the very same Comentario you’d run yourself, just without the grease under your fingernails: the only thing you’ll need is a subscription.

Getting started

  1. Sign up for an account. If all you want is to chime in on other people’s websites, you’re done already: that part costs nothing.
  2. Add your website as a domain in the Administration UI. Your first domain gets a free one-week trial on the house — no credit card, no strings attached.
  3. Embed Comentario into your pages, and watch the conversation roll in.
  4. Before the trial clock runs out, pick a service plan on the Pricing page. The plans come in different sizes, depending on how many websites you have and how many page views each of them racks up in a month.

Self-hosted or cloud?

Same Comentario, two different lifestyles. The comments, the moderation, the sign-ins, the Administration UI — all of it works exactly alike wherever it lives. The difference is who’s on the hook when something needs doing:

  • Comentario Cloud is the all-inclusive resort: we run the servers, apply the updates, and lose sleep over the backups, while you sip your coffee and read what your visitors have to say. In exchange, you pick a service plan, and each plan has its limits.
  • Self-hosted Comentario is the cabin in the woods you built yourself: free, with no limits whatsoever, and every server, update and backup is lovingly, entirely yours.

Changed your mind? No hard feelings: export a domain’s data from one and import it into the other, in either direction. Pack light, though: the move isn’t a perfect copy, and a few things get lost in transit — see what is and isn’t transferred before you set off.
